Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year!
Your Team at the ICC Headquarters in Vienna would like to extend the best wishes to the ICC family and to all ICC e-News recipients. We would like to wish you enjoyable holidays and God’s blessings in 2010. We would like to thank all members and friends of ICC worldwide for their association with ICC in the past year and your highly valued contributions to ICC’s achievements to the benefit of the global cereal and grain community.
ICC's New Membership Structure
Improved Benefits and More Flexibility for ICC Members!
ICC is most pleased to announce its new membership programme with improved membership benefits and more flexible membership options. In response to feedback from ICC members, during first half of 2009 a Task Group on Membership chaired by ICC President Prof John Taylor evaluated ways to improve member benefits and make ICC membership more flexible, so that as many people as possible around the world can be involved in the ICC family. To see the details please go to http://www.icc.or.at/membership.php
NEW: Four ICC Membership Categories for You to Choose from
More flexible membership options offer the perfect solution for you! With the addition of two new categories complementing the traditional ICC Country Membership and Corporate Membership, the new ICC Institutional Membership and the Individual Services Subscriber Package will expand the scope and the user friendliness of ICC’s services and special offering for ICC members and affiliates to the global ICC family. Starting with 1 January 2010 ICC will offer the following packages:
- ICC Country Membership, with new additional benefits, lower fees and special discounts for low income countries!
- ICC Institutional Membership, a new category with new benefits! An entirely new category mainly addressing research organisations, industry/trade associations, policy makers, (inter)national consortia working in the food and feed sector, research institutions, universities, publishers, etc. Institutional Membership offers additional benefits (compared to Corporate Membership) and voting rights in the ICC General Assembly. Two or more member institutions in a country, depending on the size of the country, can constitute an ICC Country Member with full membership rights and benefits.

New ICC Country Membership Structure and Discounts for Low Income Countries
ICC Country Membership is the highest level of affiliation with ICC and bears special offerings, rights and benefits. It is the primary venue to influence the association’s activities and priorities and directly benefit from these outputs. Recently, the ICC General Assembly approved the re-structuring of the ICC Country Membership
- by simplifying the categories with now three population based categories (instead of formerly 5 categories),
- with new additional benefits,
- with extended voting rights in the General Assembly,
- with lower yearly membership fees, and
- with additional discounts for low income countries (25% discounts for developing countries in cognisance of Per Capita GDP and HDI, based on the list of 2008). Qualifying countries for a discounted ICC country Membership fee can be found in the United Nation’s Human Development Index (HDI) list of 2008 as low and/or medium human development countries OR in the World Bank’s list of economies' income as low-income, lower-middle-income economies, and upper-middle-income economies. Making use of the discounted fee reduces the number of votes in the General Assembly, however an upgrading to become a fully paying Country Member is possible at any time and thus securing full voting rights.
NEW: ICC Institutional Membership
ICC Institutional Membership is an entirely new category mainly addressing research organisations, industry/trade associations, policy makers, (inter)national consortia working in the food and feed sector, research institutions, universities, publishers, etc. Institutional Membership offers additional benefits (compared to Corporate Membership) and voting rights in the ICC General Assembly. Two or more member institutions in a country, depending on the size of the country, can constitute an ICC Country Member with full membership rights and benefits. Current ICC Corporate Members belonging to any of the addressed sectors mentioned above may upgrade their membership to Institutional Membership at any time. For more information please go here or sign up today by contacting office@icc.or.at.
NEW: ICC Individual Services Subscriber Package
The ICC Individual Services Subscriber Package is an entirely new service addressing individuals from academia, research professionals, employees and decision makers in the food and feed industries, consultants in the food and feed manufacturing and quality control areas, policy makers, and providers of analytical methods/appliances and test kits. The subscriber package includes free online access to QAS - the official ICC journal – Quality Assurance and Safety of Crops & Foods (currently 4 issues per year), discounts on various other publications, and other services. For details please see www.icc.or.at/indiv.php. To sign up today please contact office@icc.or.at.

The aim is to bring together grain producers, seed breeders, grain scientists and technologists, millers, bakers, cereal and grain food processors and suppliers from all over the world to discuss all aspects of quality and safety of grain crops and food made from them. Details, programme and registration can be found at http://web.up.ac.za/default.asp?ipkCategoryID=2055.
Sweden: Final HEALTHGRAIN Conference, “Enhancing health benefits of cereal foods – results, perspectives and challenges“, Lund, Sweden, 5-7 May 2010
HEALTHGRAIN is a unique project that has brought together researchers from 17 countries, plant breeders, millers, ingredient suppliers and the food industry right across Europe. The links between whole grain consumption and good health are being unravelled and the HEALTHGRAIN research results have created worldwide interest.
This final conference will provide the opportunity to examine the results, to debate the key outcomes, to make recommendations for public health and for the advancement of further research efforts. The key thrust of this European research has been on plant breeding and technology, grain science and technology, consumer research and the biological sciences and health. There is now a need to harness the results, to motivate adults and children in Europe to increase grain consumption with safe, quality and highly acceptable products, and to identify the best ways to promote and communicate the health benefits of cereal grains to consumers.
The aim of this conference is to set out the state of the art on cereal grain science and technology. The leading themes will include:
- Grain technologies and health-related outcomes
- Cereal grains and health benefits
- Consumer and regulatory issues
- The future of cereal grain
The form of the meeting will ensure close cooperation between food technologists, food processors, nutritionists, policy makers and regulatory affairs experts, offering a truly multidisciplinary and stimulating platform for further research and product innovation.

After the success of the First International MoniQA Conference in Rome (8-10 October 2008) the second conference will set out the state of the art on emerging and persisting food scares and the analytical challenges and socio-economic impact that are connected with this issue. In particular we will provide an in-depth look at the following thematic areas:
- Food Allergens
- Food Authenticity
- Food Additives and Processing Toxicants
- Microbiological Contaminants
- Mycotoxins/Phycotoxins
The conference will also feature results from related projects, such as BioCop www.biocop.org and Conffidence www.conffidence.eu.

GF10 – Second International Symposium on Gluten Free Products and Beverages
It is our pleasure to invite colleagues from academia, industry and regulatory authorities to the ICC endorsed Second International Symposium on Gluten-free Cereal Products and Beverages, or GF10, to be held on 8-11 June 2010, in Tampere, Finland. The prevalence of coeliac disease is increasing, with up to two percent of western populations being potential sufferers. The disease is triggered by gluten, but it is still not fully clear which cereal proteins are the harmful ones. It is a major technological challenge for food scientists to design alternative gluten-free products of high quality. Another challenge is the rapid and reliable analysis of gluten so that the safety of gluten-free products can be ensured. The Symposium follows the inaugural event held in Cork, Ireland, in 2007.
Upcoming MoniQA FSTs – Food Scientist Training
MoniQA FSTs are open to anyone also outside the MoniQA consortium. MoniQA FSTs offer extra-curricular training courses for PhD students and post Docs, tailor made seminars for industry and research for continued professional development (CPD), and providing information and support for decision makers and policy makers.
To view the detailed agenda and to register for any MoniQA FST please go to the training site of www.moniqa.org/MoniQAFST.
