New Initiatives and Achievements in 2009

QAS - Call for Papers in the new ICC/MoniQA Journal
ICC – International Association for Cereal Science and Technology - in cooperation with MoniQA are issuing a new international journal titled QAS - Quality Assurance and Safety of Crops & Foods which will be publishing peer-reviewed, scientific primary research papers and review papers in the areas of cereals, grain crops, their quality and issues relating to food safety.
This official peer-reviewed Journal of ICC and MoniQA will appear in March 2009 and will be published by Wiley-Blackwell with Stanley Cauvain and Roland Poms as the Joint Editors in Chief. Find more detailed information online:

New! Joint ICC-AACC Int'l Check Sample Proficiency Testing Services
Laboratory accuracy and subsequent control are premises on which ICC and AACC Int'l began undertaking a joint proficiency testing service for cereal related analysis in quality, physical and food safety testing. As an important safeguard to food-related laboratories worldwide, the Joint ICC-AACC Int'l Check Sample Service provides a service by which to check their techniques on a regular and frequent basis to insure quality control. Bangkok: MoniQA to strengthen ASEAN-EU collaboration in food safety
Following an invitation by CIRAD - the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development and AIT – the Asian Institute of Technology to Bangkok, Thailand, to attend the EU-Southeast Asia Expert Meeting on Food Quality, Safety & Traceability, 24-27 February 2009, MoniQA was represented by Roland Poms from ICC, Anton Alldrick from Campden BRI, and Joerg Stroka from JRC- IRMM to identify topics of common interest for EU and SEA partners in the thematic "Food Quality, Safety & Traceability" toward a strengthening of S&T collaboration between Southeast Asia and EU in the FP7 programmes. Under the leadership of MoniQA 4 new proposals for future EU calls for SICAs (Specific International Cooperation Actions) were drafted. During the successful meeting chaired by Didier Monet from CIRAD and Sudip Rakshit from AIT a total of 10 proposals were drafted and collaboration initiatives between ASEAN and EU countries were substantiated. The meeting was sponsored by the European Commission and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Brussels: MoniQA to strengthen EU-Korean collaboration in food safety
On 3 March 2009, Roland Poms from ICC and Franz Ulberth from JRC-IRMM were invited to an EU-Korean Expert Meeting in Brussels, organised by the European Commission's DG Research to initiate FP7 involvement of Korean institutions and to strengthen access for EU entities into the Korean market and research area. MoniQA was identified as an ideal vehicle to strengthen bilateral networking and research activities in preparation of potential FP7 collaborations.

MoniQA Progress Report 2008
In the second year of MoniQA www.moniqa.org, the network activities focused on strengthening integration between partner institutions, produce tangible outputs for consortium and external stakeholder use, disseminating relevant information and training tools to stakeholders in the food safety and quality field, preparing and publishing harmonised protocols and position papers, and preparing the way forward for MoniQA's sustainability programme.

Reports on ICC Organised/Endorsed Events 2008

ICC Governing Council Meeting, Vienna, 9-10 February 2009
The ICC Governing Council convened in Vienna, 9-10 February 2009, to discuss operational issues concerning the Associations past achievements and future plans, budgetary implications and strategic cooperation with related organisations. Recommendations will be passed on to the ICC Executive Committee for decision making and finally to the ICC General Assembly for approval.

2nd MoniQA Governing Council Meeting, Brussels, 12-13 February 2009
The second annual MoniQA Governing Council meeting was convened 12 – 13 February 2009 in Brussels and chaired by Marina Carcea, President-Elect of ICC, after the completion of the second Project Period. In its function as the MoniQA consortium’s decision-making and arbitration body, the Governing Council were to approve the second period’s activity report and plan for the next JPA - Joint Programme of Activity. Emphasis was given to the overall strategy, budgetary issues and the concept for MoniQA sustainability, i.e. the format and timelines for establishing a MoniQA "entity".

2nd MoniQA Annual Meeting in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, 20-22 January 2009
The second MoniQA Annual Meeting was held 20 – 22 January 2009. In total 58 participants from partner organisations and the Advisory Panel attended the meeting that included specific workshops and generals sessions for spreading of excellence, socio-economic case studies, MoniQA working group meetings (such as the food allergens, mycotoxins/phycotoxins, and socio-economic impact assessment), as well as the Management Board and project work packages. A strong focus was given to the sustainability programme and management to deal with the upcoming issues on project sustainability. Progress in the second year and new plans for the next were presented by the work package leaders.

The conference programme of the 17th International IGV Conference, an International ICC Conference, entitled GRAINS ARE FUNCTIONAL, is now available. The meeting is co-organised by IGV GmbH, ICC, HEALTHGRAIN, and the Berlin-Brandenburgische Gesellschaft für Getreideforschung e.V. The conference will be held in English and German and will take place at IGV, Bergholz-Rehbrücke, Germany, 11-12 May 2009.

Canada: IWQC-IV: 4th International Wheat Quality Conference IV, Saskatoon, 2-6 June 2009 – 2nd Call for Papers!
Please mind the second call for papers and the extension of the submission deadline to 1 April 2009 for oral and poster presentation at the 4th International Wheat Quality Conference - Wheat Science: Challenges and Opportunities, to be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, 2–6 June 2009. ICC Expert Summit on Food Security in Vienna, 29-30 June 2009
After the successful strategic ICC conference ECC 2002 – the birth of HEALTHGRAIN, ICC will hold its second event on strategic research and development in 2009:
Expert Summit on Food Security - Critical Research and Development Project Needs for a Safe, Sustainable and Sufficient Food and Feed Supply, 29+30 June 2009, Vienna, Austria. The aim of the meeting is to bring together a group of experts in grains, agriculture and socio-economics, both scientists & technologists, and governmental persons, from across the world to determine critical research and development project needs and related funding schemes in the grains- and crops-related areas in response to the world staple food crisis and the deliberations of the FAO's Conference on World Food Security held in Rome in June 2008.

Austria: 4th International Dietary Fibre Conference, DF09, Vienna, 1-3 July 2009

DF09 is organised by ICC and endorsed by IUNS-International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the HEALTHGRAIN project, ILSI Europe, and AACC Int'l. From over 130 received papers a very exciting and high level conference programme is being developed, which will be published shortly.

Italy. Eighth European Young Cereal Scientists and Technologists Workshop
On August 3–5, 2009, Cereals∓Europe (C&E) will organize its traditional three-day low-cost workshop for Ph.D. students and young professionals working in the field of cereal science and technology. The workshop will cover a broad range of cereal-related topics, including breeding, biotechnology, ingredients functionality, processing, nutrition, and much more. Participants are invited to actively participate by sending abstracts of their presentation before June 1. Submission instructions, an abstract template, travel information, registration forms, and other relevant information will be available soon on www.cerealsandeurope.net.

France: Xth International Gluten Workshop, Clermont-Ferrand, 7-9 September 2009
Organized by Clermont-Ferrand INRA Center and endorsed by ICC, the tenth International Gluten Workshop will take place the 7-9 September 2009 at Clermont-Ferrand Diocesan Center. Two hundred scientists from around the world are expected to present their work and break-throughs on the topic of gluten. If you wish to register for this workshop, or if you simply want to know more, please go to https://colloque.inra.fr/xth_igw/. Authors are invited to submit their abstract for oral and poster presentation. The final decision between oral presentation and poster contribution will be taken by the scientific committee.

Macedonia: IV International Symposium of Livestock Production, Ohrid, Macedonia, 9-11 September, 2009 – Call for abstracts and exhibitors!
Organised by the Institute of Animal Science, University "Ss. Cyril and Methodius", under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy of the Republic of Macedonia, and endorsed by ICC, the IV International Symposium of Livestock Production will be held in the period 9-11 September, 2009 in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. The program of the Symposium will be focused on the most significant achievements in the field of livestock production, as well as on the exchange of knowledge and experience in the agricultural practice.

Austria: ISM Conference: Worldwide Mycotoxin Reduction in Food and Feed Chains, Tulln, 9-11 September 2009
The ISM 2009 is organised by the International Society for Mycotoxicology with the aim to facilitate a Global Discussion on the Worldwide Mycotoxin Reduction in Food and Feed Chains between scientists, opinion leaders, decision-makers and industry in the specific research area of mycotoxin reduction. Germany: IV International Symposium on Sourdough: from arts to science, Freising, near Munich, 14-17 October 2009
This symposium wants to bring together all colleagues related to the arts and science of sourdough production and muse, residing at universities, research institutes and (research departments of) companies. In particular the symposium wants to address young researchers and (PhD) students to exchange and discuss their novel results, stimulate new ideas and bring forward international collaborations and short term missions.
